Question settings
Every question carries its own settings: what it asks, what it accepts, how it looks and what it is worth.
Updated
Open a question by clicking it in the builder. The settings panel fills with the sections that question type supports, and nothing else.
Open the settings for a question
- Click the question in the canvas.
- Read the panel beside it. The sections depend on the block: a text question has validation, a choice question has options.
- Change a setting and the canvas updates as you go. There is no save button.

Set the label, the help text and the default
Four settings appear on almost every question, and they decide what the respondent reads and whether they can skip it.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Label | The question itself. It is also the column title when you export answers. |
| Description | The help text under the label. One example is worth more than a paragraph. |
| Required | Refuses an empty answer. A logic rule can switch it on for some answers only. |
| Hide field | Keeps the question in the form but out of sight, which is how a stored value stays with the answer. |
| Default value | Pre-fills the answer where the type supports it. |
Making a question required is the cheapest fix for an answer you keep having to chase. For a question that only matters to some people, use conditional logic instead, so the requirement follows their answer.
Stop a bad answer before it is sent
The Validation section opens collapsed, and holds the checks that run before an answer is accepted. A check runs while the person is still on the question, so a wrong phone number or a malformed code is fixed there rather than by email a day later.
- Min characters and Max characters for a text answer.
- Regex pattern with Must look like, so the error names what was wanted rather than what failed.
- A check left empty does not run, so an unused section is harmless.
Set how the input behaves while someone types
Formatting decides what the field does during entry, not what it accepts afterwards.
- Input mask fixes the shape of an answer, such as a phone number.
- Browser autofill lets a browser fill the field for the person.
- Default rows and Autosize set the height of a long answer.
Override the theme for one question
Design overrides the form theme for this one question: Field width, Corner radius, Background and Text color, with a reset back to the theme.
Use an override for the one field that has to stand out. It survives a later theme change, so a restyled form can keep a field that no longer matches. The theme for the whole form is set in the design drawer, and share a form covers what publishes with it.
Add points and a correct answer
On a quiz, the same panel holds the answer key and the points. A question counts towards the score only once it has a key.
Setting keys, points and a pass mark is covered in quiz scoring.
